Involve Your Church in Charitable Activities
If you are looking to get involved in charitable work, your church may be a great place to start. Church teachings are based on charity and helping others. You will likely find many places to volunteer your time, money, and expertise, and your support will be greatly appreciated. Whether it is helping with weekly meals for homeless people, hosting a ‘tent city' for homeless people, raising money for victims of natural disasters, or getting involved in other community causes, you church can help you find a way to help.
Simple Fundraising Ideas
There are a number of ways your church groups to raise money for the church or to donate to other charitable causes. Bake sales are always a good fundraiser, one that has become popular worldwide. They are easy to organize and carry out, either after church services or at another convenient time. Parishioners and community members can donate their favorite cookies, cakes, and other items. An alternate is to have a healthy bake sale, offering low sugar, low fat, snacks. Bake sales are great social events, allowing you to get to know community members and explain your cause to attendees, gaining new supporters.
Garage sales are another great fundraiser. They can be general sales, or target specific areas such as books, movies, or music. There are two approaches to such a sale. One is to have a big sale at your church, combining donations from everyone interested. A large sale may garner lots of interest. The second approach is to have many church members have sales at their homes over the course of several weekends. This allows flexibility in days and times for those who might otherwise not be able to help with the larger sale. Either way, make sure you have information about the charity you are supporting available so people know where their money is going. You can even have a donation bin where people can donate directly to your charity.
Another simple way to raise funds is having an arts and crafts fair. You can set up tables for people to sell arts, crafts, food, and other products. Funds can come from charging rental fees for the space as well as requesting a portion of the proceeds be donated to the charity. You can include activities such as arts projects for kids, a caricature artist, or a cake walk to make the event even more fun. You might even get local companies to donate food, supplies, or products you can use or sell to raise more money.
Volunteer Events
In addition to fundraising, your church group can get involved in volunteer activities. If your church has a kitchen facility, you can host a weekly or monthly dinner for poor or homeless people. Church members can volunteer to donate food, cook, set up tables, serve food, or clean up afterwards. They can also be involved in publicizing the event.
In many communities, homeless people are seeking safe places to live and sleep. Your church may wish to host a ‘tent city' of homeless people for a month or two. Parishioners can offer security to the group, provide food, blankets, and tents, or offer mentoring and training to help people gain the confidence and skills to find a job that pays enough to allow them to find a home. This offers an opportunity to meet members of the community that church members might otherwise not interact with and possibly gain new parishioners.
Your church group may also want to sponsor monthly community service projects. You can find one area your members are passionate about and focus on that. Alternately, you might focus on a new area every month or every few months. For instance, you might adopt a classroom, tutoring the students, taking them on special field trips, buying extra supplies, etc. You might also get involved in restoring a local park, school ground, or other public space. Church members may wish to volunteer together at a food bank, center for abused people, farming cooperative, or other group. Find something you and others in your church are interested in, and you're sure to find a group that needs volunteers.
As you can see, there are many opportunities to get involved in fundraising and volunteering through your church. Every event you are involved in allows you to not only serve the greater community and support a worthy cause, but also to make new connections and perhaps even gain some new members for your church.
